Vasectomy Post Operative Information

Vasectomy Post Op Instructions

  1. Wear an athletic supporter or jock strap for several days. Thereafter, you may wear it as long as you are more comfortable with it on.
  2. Avoid strenuous physical activity for five to seven days. You may perform all other normal activities.
  3. You can shower on the second day. You may apply soapy water gently to the scrotum to wash. Rinse and dry by blotting the skin. Do not rub.
  4. All sutures are dissolvable and do not require removal. If a stitch comes away prematurely, the incision may open slightly and a small amount of discharge from the wound may develop.  Continue to shower as before, and place a small gauze pad inside the supporter, after washing with hydrogen peroxide and placing Bacitracin ointment on the area in question. You may purchase these gauze sponges at most drugstores.
  5. Pain medicine will be prescribed for after the procedure.  Use as necessary according to the instructions.
  6. Slight oozing of blood, some tenderness and mild swelling in the areas of the incisions are not unusual and should subside within 3 - 7 days. If there is an unusual amount of pain or a large amount of swelling to the scrotum, the doctor should be notified.    If the office is already closed, the answering service will assist you in contacting the doctor.
  7. Before proceeding with unprotected intercourse, you must produce a semen sample in which no sperm are found, this sample is usually obtained after 20 – 30 ejaculations and three months.
  8. Instructions for obtaining a semen sample will be given to you when you come in the office for your post operative appointment, approximately 3 weeks following the vasectomy.
